What Fibre Backhaul Means for Regional Networks

Backhaul is the link that carries traffic from a cell site back to the core network, and the choice between fibre and microwave shapes reliability more than almost any other design decision.
In regional deployments, terrain, right-of-way access, and maintenance windows all push the decision one way or another. Fibre offers higher capacity and lower long-term maintenance, but trenching costs and permitting can extend timelines by months.
Microwave links deploy faster and avoid ground works entirely, but are more sensitive to line-of-sight obstructions and weather in mountainous regions.
For most regional networks, a hybrid approach works best: fibre along accessible highway corridors, with microwave filling gaps to harder-to-reach sites.
